Resilience Training

Resilience Training Program

Between 2005 and 2007, the Resilience Partners conducted regional training workshops to introduce coral reef practitioners to the principles of resilience. Workshops were held in the Caribbean, Western Pacific, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Western Indian Ocean for a total of 140 participants from 40 different countries and territories. Additional workshops with similar curricula were held in the Red Sea and South Pacific.

Topics covered at the gatherings included an Introduction to Resilience Principles and Concepts, Marine Habitat Classification, MPA Design, Monitoring for Coral Bleaching, Reef Fish Spawning Aggregation Conservation and Communicating about Reef Health. Participants worked with regional experts to apply the concepts of resilience directly to their sites and countries in a series of hands-on exercises.

The content of the workshops is based on several products produced by the Resilience Partners and other partner organizations. These products include the Reef Resilience Toolkit, Reef Managers Guide to Coral Bleaching, and A Global Protocol for Assessment and Monitoring of Coral Bleaching.

The training workshops are part of a larger strategy to engage coral reef managers in discussions and activities that relate to building resilience into coral reef management. This website fulfills part of that strategy in its goal to share new information and support a dialogue among practitioners that solves problems and answers questions. Ultimately, the aim is to begin responding to the increasing trend of coral bleaching and other major disturbances that are difficult for site and regional managers to tackle.

Workshop Manual

A key component of the workshops is the Reef Resilience Workshop Manual. The manual takes you through the activities and presentations as well as provides some additional resources. This manual was adapted to fit the regional differences and needs for individual workshops.

We have included a generic copy of this manual, below. You may download the entire large pdf document or separate pdf sections. If you are unable to download this document for any reason, please contact us to arrange another method. For information about designing a similar training or information exchange, please contact us.

Other Training Resources

A CD that includes the manual, powerpoint presentations, various educational resources, and photos was produced for each workshop. If you would like a copy of a particular workshop CD, please contact us.
