Reef Resilience: Building Resilience into Coral Reef Conservation

Resilience Workshops

Between 2005 and 2010, the Resilience Partners conducted regional training workshops to introduce coral reef practitioners to the principles of resilience. Workshops have been held in the Caribbean, Western Pacific, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Western Indian Ocean for over 200 participants from 60 different countries and territories. Additional workshops with similar curricula were held in the Red Sea and South Pacific. We have included a page listing the workshop participating sites through 2010, with more information about participating groups. A workshop for trainers was held in June, 2011, for Pacific reef managers.

Topics covered at the trainings include an Introduction to Resilience Principles and Concepts, Marine Habitat Classification, MPA Design, Reef Fish Spawning Aggregation Conservation, Ocean Acidification, Monitoring and Bleaching Prediction Tools, and Communicating about Reef Health. Participants work with regional experts to apply the concepts of resilience directly to their sites and countries in a series of hands-on exercises.

The content of the workshops is based on several products produced by the Resilience Partners and other partner organizations. These products included the Reef Resilience Toolkit (on this site), Reef Managers Guide to Coral Bleaching, and A Global Protocol for Assessment and Monitoring of Coral Bleaching.

The workshops are part of a larger strategy to engage coral reef managers in discussions and activities that relate to building resilience into coral reef management. Check out the Resilience Practitioners Network to engage in online discussion with managers — contact us to become a member of this network. This website fulfills part of that strategy in its goal to share new information and support a dialogue among practitioners that solves problems and answers questions. Ultimately, the aim of these trainings is to help managers begin responding to the increasing trend of coral bleaching and other major disturbances.

Workshop Manual

A key component of the workshops is the Reef Resilience Workshop Manual. The manual takes the user through the activities and presentations and provides some additional resources. This manual was adapted for regional differences and needs of individual workshops.

We have included a generic copy of this manual, below. You may download the entire large pdf document or separate pdf sections. If you are unable to download this document for any reason, please contact us to arrange another method. For information about designing a similar training or information exchange, please contact us.

Other Training Resources

A CD that includes the manual, powerpoint presentations, various educational resources, and photos was produced for each workshop. If you would like a copy of a particular workshop CD, please contact us.

The Reef Resilience Online Course is available year-round.

A Training of Trainers course will be held again in 2012. To get an idea of the curriculum, you may download the 2011 Palau Training of Trainers Workshop Manual (14,544k).
