Anticipating Change

Usual MPA selection criteria do not adequately address resilience or guide management interventions to address emerging global threats, such as mass coral bleaching.

Historically, economic criteria (e.g., linked to tourism and fisheries values) have driven the selection of MPAs.

• Tourism is an important source of revenue in most developing countries and is given high priority.

• Fisheries replenishment has played an increasingly dominant role in MPA selection and design over the past decade. This is often a result of local public participation. This same public input must be recognized and included in any successful plan to integrate concerns for mass coral bleaching in MPA design.
